Hi, thanks for stopping by!   I’m Dan and I founded HerbalLocks in 2014.

Why we do what we do

Focusing on hair care in our own way, HerbalLocks was created to support the movement toward organic living.  For quite some time, researchers, doctors, and everyday consumers alike have worried about the hazards of industrial chemicals in the ingredients we ingest, be they food, beverages, shampoos, or cosmetics.  Until relatively recently, the return-to-natural movement was treated as a bunch of paranoid worriers.  “There’s nothing to worry about when it comes to chemical X or Y,” the mainstream voices first said.  Then they conceded,  “these chemicals might be hazardous, but they won’t affect you because they’re delivered in such small doses.”  They neglected the fact that everyday “small dose” exposure to numerous chemicals tends to add up.  As discoveries continue to mount about the dangers of industrial and artificial agents, the movement toward organic living is finally gaining the legitimacy and momentum it’s always deserved.  We’re proud to be a small part of it.

Taking back “natural” and “organic”

As the “natural” and “organic” labels gain steam, many seek to capitalize on them.  The labels are often co-opted by the very same food and cosmetics companies that scared us into using natural remedies to begin with.  As such, “organic” and “natural” hair products are often anything but.  When it comes to food, medicine, and other ingredients we ingest internally, governmental and non-governmental organizations vet the products we use.  We have the legally-mandated “FDA-certified organic” label, for example.  When it comes to external products, like shampoos and conditioners, however, we don’t have the same protections.  Since there’s no legally-mandated definition of “organic” in the world of hair care, there a lot of misleading products out there.  With that in mind, we’re here to support fact over fiction.

Understanding organic ingredients

There are many ingredients that go into natural hair care remedies.  Many of these ingredients are beneficial, others neutral, and some might have negative effects depending on your unique qualities.  After all, not everything natural is harmless, or undeserving of carefulness (you wouldn’t shampoo with poison ivy, would you?).  As such, we’re here to shed light on natural ingredients and their effects so you can find the solutions that work for you.

The remedies we like

Instead of focusing on obscure cleansers, styling products, or other cosmetic treatments, we’ve narrowed our focus to the select remedies we think best support beautiful and healthy hair.  These include natural shampoos and conditioners, essential oils, and coconut oil, an ingredient we think deserves special attention in light of its unmatched benefits.
