Coconut Oil for Hair Benefits

coconutIf you’ve been reading up on coconut oil recently, you know it’s the new big thing in health and beauty. Many people turn to coconut oil for cholesterol reduction, bacteria resistance, weight maintenance, and other benefits. Rich in nutrients, it’s no surprise that nutritionists and consumers alike are looking to coconut oil for hair benefits.

First, let’s focus on how and why coconut oil is oh so good for your hair…

The Benefits

coconut oil for hair benefits Hair Strengthening and Moisture

Coconut oil is abundant in vitamin E, a vital ingredient for healthy skin and hair. The oil is also rich in lauric acid and capric acid, which invigorate your hair follicles with natural proteins. Whether you’re going for daily hair maintenance or serious repair, coconut oil is effective.

Scalp Benefits

Coconut oil is one of the best dandruff remedies. It’s 50% lauric acid, a natural anti-fungal ingredient that can help shield your skin from infection. With the help of vitamin E, it moisturizes deeply and gently washes away dead skin cells, leaving your scalp feeling soothed and refreshed.

Natural

Common conditioners strip the nutrients out of your hair. Also, they’re filled with water, which gives you a false sense of moisture since it dries up within minutes. Not tococonut tree canopy mention the usual issues that go along with chemical-heavy cleansers.

Value

With a price comparable to a bottle of olive oil, you can save you big bucks if you use coconut oil in place of high-end treatments and conditioners.

Shelf Life

Unlike plenty of other organic treatments we can think of, coconut oil has a nice long shelf life. The stuff basically lasts forever.

How to Pick the Right Coconut Oil

  • Look for the trusty “organic”, “non-GMO” labels.
  • Only go for the virgin, unrefined versions of the oil.
  • Stay away from the the bleached, hydrogenated, or deodorized stuff. Such brands are filled with chemicals that offset and overpower the oil’s benefits.
  • Go for the oil that’s contained in glass. Plastic containers can leak parabens and other chemicals into the oil.

How to Use Coconut Oil on Your Hair

What You’ll Need:

  • Virgin, unrefined Coconut Oil
  • Measuring spoons
  • Small bowl for water
  • Glass for coconut oil (glass must fit into bowl)
  • Shower cap or other comfortable head wrap (you’ll be wearing it for at least an hour)
  • An old shirt that can get oily
  • Towel for oil drip cleanup

Instructions:

  1. Fill bowl with one cup of warm water (around 80 degrees F or more).
  2. Place 2-3 tsp coconut oil into the glass.
  3. Place the glass in the bowl to begin heating the coconut oil, and leave it in the water until the oil melts. It shouldn’t take to long if your water is warm enough.
  4. Dampen your hair a bit so the oil will spread more easily.
  5. Wearing a shirt that can get oily, gently massage the coconut oil into your hair.
  6. Comb your hair to disperse the oil evenly.
  7. Wrap your hair in a shower cap or other head covering for at least an hour. Overnight is preferable (the longer you go, the more conditioning you’ll get). There will be some dripping from the oil, so make sure to have a towel on hand for cleanup.
  8. Remove the head covering and wash your hair to remove the oil. Here’s the most important step! Make sure to use your favorite natural shampoo. It would be a shame to wash out the coconut oil’s nutrients and fatty acids by making the mistake of using a harsh chemical detergent.
